It's all about depth for the Lady Barons this year.

[VIDEO] Winter Sports Previews 2012: Manheim Central Wrestling

The defending Section 2 champs will have a tough ride if they want to defend the crown.

Many senior leaders graduated after a successful run to the Section 2 championship last year, and there are many fresh faces in the wrestling room in Manheim.

Success this year will all depend on how quickly the new wrestlers adapt to the varsity scene; but if they do, the Barons could once again be a force.

Clay was an all-state selection at running back as he helped Catholic win the PIAA AA state championship last season.

He finished his Crusader career just 60 yards shy of the 6,000 yard mark... making him the all-time leading rusher in L-L League history (and third-most all-time in District 3).

PennLive
Titus made some clutch plays on Friday night in Catholic High's 20-7 win over Cocalico in the District quarterfinals. He made two picks - the first a pick six (with a 98 yard race to the house); and the second, an interception in the last few minutes of the game to ice the win for the Crusaders.

Local players help Syracuse field hockey reach NCAA Final Four

Cocalico grad Jordan Page and Warwick grad Alyssa Manley shine for an Orange squad that is headed to the Final Four for the second time in program history.

Cocalico's Jordan Page, Warwick's Alyssa Manley and Hempfield's Lauren Brooks are all part of the squad that beat Penn State on Sunday5-2 to take Syracuse into the Final Four.

Page is having a great tournament so far; scoring two goals against the Nittany Lions, making it three goals in two days for the sophomore.

Manley got an assist on Sunday, passing to Liz McInerney to make it 3-1 against PSU.

This is only the first time the Orange have ever won two games in the NCAA tournament away from home, and only the second time they've made it to the Final Four (the first was back in 2008).

Athlete of the Week: Roman Clay

Lancaster Catholic's Roman Clay is our Athlete of the Week after becoming the L-L League's all-time leading rusher on Friday night.

Clay tallied 327 yards in Lancaster Catholic's win over Hershey this Friday, passing Lebanon Catholic's Tommy Long. Clay's career total is 5,688... with at least one game (this Friday against Cocalico) to add to it.

Congrats to Roman (and his offensive lines, past and present!) for achieving the impressive feat.

L-L League Coaching Changes

Garden Spot wrestling and Warwick boys lacrosse will have new men at the helm come the next season.

A couple of coaching changes to let you know about this next year.
Garden Spot and Central
fighting for the section crown

The Garden Spot wrestling team will begin its quest to retake the section two crown in about three weeks. And when the Spartans hit the mats, they will have a new general this year.

Brian Schilling is the new head coach for the Garden Spot wrestling team. Schilling was the Spartans' head middle school coach. He succeeds Hoyt Craver as the man in charge of the high school program.

Schilling is a Souderton High School graduate. After graduating Bloomsberg University, he went on to coach his alma mater and for the Elmhurst, Illinois, wrestling program before coming to New Holland.

Schilling and his men will take to the mat in a scrimmage on November 24 at Dallastown High School.
Warwick's Jake Watson
with the acrobatic save

More coaching changes, this time in Lititz, where Wayne Hummer is the new Warwick head boys' lacrosse coach.

Hummer, taking the reigns from Chris Schmehl, played for the Warriors first boys' lacrosse team back when the program was created.

He most recently coached lacrosse as an assistant at Lancaster Mennonite and also serves as a volunteer wrestling coach at Warwick.

Lampeter Bowl Postponed

The East/West Lampeter Bowl is postponed due to unplayable conditions after Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy strikes again. On the same day District 3 playoffs got going again,  two L-L League football week 10 football games are postponed.
Sandy disrupts football schedule

One of those postponed is the East/West Lampeter Bowl. Lampeter Strasburg and Conestoga Valley were scheduled to face off on Friday night, but will now fight for the cup on Saturday at 1 PM.

The game was rescheduled because both squads could not practice, because both teams have grass fields.

This is a big game for L-S who is on the outside looking in at 17 in the latest District 3 AAA power rankings.

Elco's non-league game at North Schuylkill was also moved to Saturday at 1 PM.

Pennsylvania will not have a chance to take back the Big 33 crown from Ohio next summer. The Big 33 Scholarship foundation announced Wednesday, that PA will now face Maryland. This is part of a five year deal that begins June 2013.

The last time the two states squared off was in 1992. In the last 20 years, Ohio and Pennsylvania split the series 10 wins apiece. Although, Ohio won the last four match ups and took the overall series lead 13-12.

The June 15, 2013 game will be the 57th time the Big 33 Classic has been held.

Athlete of the Week: Jake Hertzler

LMH's Jake Hertzler nets the athlete of the week honors after stellar performances in the net.

Hetzler leaping for a save in the L-L Final
Usually it's the goal scorers that nab all the headlines, but this week a keeper is looking to change that. Lancaster Mennonite's net minder, Jake Hertzler, had one outstanding day in between the posts on Saturday, helping his Blazers claim their sixth L-L League soccer title.

Hertzler kept Conestoga Valley out, making clutch save after clutch save, ending the day with a clean sheet  through almost 2 full periods of extra time - and at some points during the match was under constant pressure.

Lawver Earns All State Honors

Cocalico's Kat Lawver adds All State honors to her resume.

Lawver Takes Aim
Three L-L League girls soccer players have earned All-State status including Cocalico striker, Kat Lawver.

The Section 2 First team All Star not only helped the Eagles win their first L-L League playoff game in school history, but helped her squad reach their first ever league title match. She was the fourth leading goal scorer in Section 2 this season - ending the season with 10 goals and 3 assists.

Lawver will continue her career on the pitch at the Division 1 level at Canisius College.

The senior will be honored by the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association at a banquet in Harrisburg on January 26, 2013 - joining her will be Haleigh Echard from Cedar Crest and Lampeter-Strasburg's  Bailey Corbin.

Athlete of the Week: Manheim Central Field Hockey

The Manheim Central Field Hockey Team earns the Athlete of the Week honors after their overtime brilliance this week.

The Manheim Central field hockey team was given a task in the last week of the season; they must win both of their last two remaining games to have any shot at qualifying for districts.  These girls did not shy away from the challenge, they embraced it.

The Barons became the master of overtime in the last week. On Monday, the ladies took down Ephrata in OT, and then added a double  overtime win over Cocalico, Wednesday (that is the first time the Eagles have lost in over 60 Section 2 Games).

These clutch performances earned their squad a trip to the District 3 Field Hockey playoffs. Central will now face Conestoga Valley in the preliminary round of the District tournament.

Graybill now lives in Lake Placid, New York, where she trains at the Olympic training center. There she is able to travel around the world to compete and in doing so move one step closer to her dream.. claiming a spot in the USA team for the 2014 Olympics.

We had a chance to talk to her during her brief vacation. Check out the interview with her, and her mother, Angela Graybill, below.

[VIDEO] Exchange Student Assists Ephrata Volleyball

Brazilian exchange student, Ligia Manguino, finds a second home with the Ephrata girls volleyball team.

In the world of international sports now a days, nothing is more crucial than learning a new language. But for Brazilian foreign exchange student, Ligia Manguino, coming to the USA was much more than learning a new language.

Just talking to her, you realize language comes easily to her. Yes, there might be a few words here and there that she might struggle over, but that doesn't stop her.

Ephrata volleyball didn't know what they were getting when she walked into the gym, but then soon realized this South American has some heat by the net.

And this learning experience is both ways. Ligia is learning about the USA, but the Lady Mounts are learning about Brazil.

This program an alliance on the court, and a forever type of friendship.

He fired a cold-blooded TD pass on 4th and 12 late in the game to Austin Myers to seal that victory and keep the George Male trophy in Lititz.
