Athlete of the Week: Matt Lauver

Blazer senior takes down Central on injured ankle.

Matt Lauver has led his Lancaster Mennonite team all season more. Never more so than in crunch time in the District semifinals.

After the Blazers pushed Manheim Central to a fifth and final game last Friday, Lauver twisted his ankle with the Barons on top late. But the senior came back to put away three unanswered points as LMH defeated Central to qualify for the class AA District 3 Championship.

Lauver finished with a match high 22 kills.

His injury kept him out of the final, where Mennonite was swept by defending district and state champion Northeastern.

The senior led his team in kills in every District game except the final, totaling 69 kills through the tournament.

LMH won its PIAA opener tonight to qualify for quarterfinal pool play on Friday.

Deron Thompson put together a historic season in his final year on the Warwick football team. On Wednesday night the tailback was named L-L League Player of the Year at the Manheim Touchdown Club's 13th Annual Banquet.

The two other finalists were Cocalico's record-setting running back Austin Hartman and Conestoga Valley's beast of a two-way lineman Travis Switzer.

Thompson became just the second player in L-L history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in the regular season. He finished with 2,135 yards and 26 touchdowns.

More information on the award and banquet can be found here.

Athlete of the Week: Derek Hart

Manheim Central standout ties career best to win District high jump.

In a true sport of inches, Derek Hart was one better than his competitors at the District 3 Track & Field Championships.

On Saturday Hart cleared six feet eight inches to claim the AAA High Jump gold medal. Garden Spot's Max Mahan and Ibn Short of Milton Hershey both jumped 6'7".

Hart also finished second in the 110 hurdles. He will compete in both events at this weekend's PIAA Championships and is the top seed in the high jump.

Baron junior wins two gold medals, one silver at L-L Championships.

The junior won the 100m dash in 12.57 seconds and took the 200m in 25.73 seconds, the only girl to break 26 seconds at the meet.

Athlete of the Week: Josiah Hershberger

Central outside hitter leads the Barons in two victories.

The Manheim Central Barons won two key boys' volleyball matches last week to establish themselves as the team to beat in Section 2.

If Central holds on it would be the program's third straight Section crown.

And the Barons were led last week by a player who has only been around for one of those.

Sophomore Josiah Hershberger had a team-high 15 kills in Central's 3-1 victory over Garden Spot on Tuesday. Hershberger followed it up with 17 kills and five blocks, both team highs, against Conestoga Valley.

The victory over Garden Spot gave the Barons the inside track to the Section title, though the regular season finale at Lancaster Mennonite could be a stumbling block.

Hershberger is second on the team in kills and leads the Barons in blocks.

L-L Soccer Championship Brackets Set

Manheim Central and Donegal were co-Section 3 Champions, with the goal differential tie-breaker giving the Barons the top seed from the section. Here are the matchups for Tuesday's quarterfinal round:

L-L Quarterfinals at Penn Manor

(2-1) Warwick vs. (4-2) Elco - 5pm
(3-1) Manheim Central vs. (1-2) Hempfield - 7pm

L-L Quarterfinals at Warwick

(4-1) Lancaster Mennonite vs. (2-2) Conestoga Valley - 5pm
(1-1) Penn Manor vs. (3-2) Donegal - 7pm

Athletes of the Week: Winters and Wilson

Manheim Central duo slugs seven home runs in four games.

Winters heads to the plate.
Manheim Central's lineup was about as productive as it gets last week. In four games the team as a whole hit .477 and drove in 58 runs.

The best of the bunch were Austin Winters and Ryan Wilson. The pair combined for seven of the team's fourteen home runs last week.

Wilson, a junior, had three jacks and drove in eight runs.
Wilson goes deep against PV.

Winters, a senior, had just plain silly numbers. He had eleven hits in seventeen at bats (.647 avg.), hit four homers and drove in twenty runs.

Quite a week by the Barons, especially those two in the heart of the order.
