Big Day for CV's Suarez

On a day that saw Manheim Central hit three home runs in one inning en route to a victory over Garden Spot, the biggest hit was a bloop single by Conestoga Valley's Adrian Suarez that gave the Buckskins a walk-off win over Ephrata.

Here Suarez and head coach Eric Frey discuss the win:

Athlete of the Week: Sam Ginder

Manheim Central senior leads potent Baron offense.

Baron Sr. Sam Ginder
Manheim Central went three for three last week as a team, extending its winning streak to five in a row.

Leading the offensive charge was senior Sam Ginder. She hit .500 in three wins over Annville-Cleona, Lebanon Catholic and Lancaster Mennonite, with a double, two home runs and six RBI.

In those three victories the Barons outscored their opponents 27-3.

For the season, Ginder's excellent numbers include a .471 average, five home runs, 11 RBI and 12 runs scored. Her home run and runs scored totals are team highs.

The Ephrata boys' lacrosse team is off to an 8-1 start in 2011, led by a deep and talented junior class.

Last week that grade's standout star was Joey Sellars. He netted 16 goals and four assists in three Mountaineer victories.

Sellars scored five against Penn Manor, seven versus Hershey and four against Garden Spot.

In Ephrata's win today over L-S, the Mounts' fifth straight, Sellars added three more goals to bring his team-high total to 30 goals so far.

Cocalico set to hire DiMatteo

Former Eagle next in line to lead girls basketball program

According to Cocalico Athletic Director Audrey Stone, Tony DiMatteo will succeed Rich Kohler as head coach of the girls' basketball team.

DiMatteo is an instructional technology coach at Cocalico Middle and High School and has experience working with both the Eagle girls' and boys' varsity programs. He will await school board approval in July.

Cocalico went 0-16 in L-L League play last season, just 2-19 overall. The Lady Eagles haven't had a winning record since the 2005-06 season when they were section champions.

Athlete of the Week: Emily Osborne

Warwick senior allows one goal in a week of overtime games

Osborne makes sliding stop to preserve scoreless game vs. Hempfield

In two games last week, Warwick's Emily Osborne was just plain outstanding between the posts...allowing just one goal in 190 minutes. On Monday against the defending L-L League Champion, Osborne and the Warriors battled to a double overtime 0-0 tie. The senior stopped 8 Hempfield shots in the effort.

On Wednesday, it was another overtime outing, this time ending in favor of the Warriors. Despite giving up their first league goal of the season in the second half, Osborne kept the Comets out of the net in overtime helping the team to a 2-1 sudden victory.

At the conclusion of last week, Emily had allowed just 3 goals in 7 games, making 22 saves.

The Warriors are 5-0-1 in league play, 5-1-1 overall. Their only loss was a 1-0 edging by the defending PIAA champs, Hershey.

Athlete of the Week: Chloe Hayter

Senior tallies six goals against section rival Hempfield.

Hayter (center) scores one of her six goals against the Knights.

Warwick lost a heartbreaker to Hempfield in the second game of the season but would not have been that close without the efforts of our Athlete of the Week.

Senior Chloe Hayter scored six times against the Lady Knights for half of Warwick's offensive output.

The Warriors bookended that loss with two wins, Hayter scored once against Exeter and twice against Cedar Crest.

Warwick aims for revenge against the Knights in a rematch at Hempfield next Tuesday.
