Athlete of the Week: Phil Wenger

Senior guard leads Catholic to District 3 championship game.

After Lancaster Catholic's first and only loss of the season (in the L-L Quarterfinals) Phil Wenger came back with a vengeance to lead the Crusaders to three district wins.

In the first round against Gettysburg, Wenger turned a close game into a blowout by scoring twelve points in third quarter. The senior tied his career-high with 28 in the game.

On Friday Wenger scored ten points and tonight he was second on the squad in scoring with eleven. The Crusaders have won three district games by an average of 28 points.

The guard leads Catholic in scoring with 12.2 points per game and head Coach Joe Klazas called Wenger the best defender Catholic has had in 20 years.

Top-seeded Lancaster Catholic will play Eastern York at 8pm Thursday at the Giant Center in a rematch of last year's championship game. The Crusaders will try and win the school's second ever district title.

CV's Kruup Succeeds With Greco-Roman Style

CV senior Delis Kruup, a native of Estonia, is in the middle of a fantastic final year for the Buckskins. His journey to the District 3 Wrestling tournament this weekend began half a world away:

Strategy Breakdown - how to beat Kruup's Greco-Roman throws:

Kruup and Garden Spot senior Anthony Huber have met twice this season. In a duel meet in early January Kruup caught Huber off guard and pinned him in 1:18.

But in the L-L Championship later that month, Huber held him off for a 3-2 decision and the gold medal.

CV head coach Trent Turner, Kruup and Garden Spot head coach Hoyt Craver analyze the two matches that ended with very different outcomes:

Athletes of the Week: MC Boys' Basketball

Barons end year as one of the most successful squads in school history.

It has been a trying year for the entire Manheim community. But in the aftermath of the tragic car accident that took the lives of four Central students in January, the Baron basketball team pulled together for a history-making season.

Manheim Central won seven of its final ten regular season games, qualifying for Leagues and Districts. A week ago Central beat Cocalico in an overtime thriller for the school's first ever L-L Tournament victory.

The team had won six total games over the past two seasons. But the return of head coach Chris Sherwood and the contributions throughout the roster, from a strong senior class on down, led to a 14-11 year.

That ties the 2010-2011 Barons for the 5th most wins in a season in school history:

CV Century Mark

Dillman becomes first wrestler to reach 100 wins

Just one-day after signing his official letter of intent to wrestle for Eastern Michigan next winter, Cole Dillman checked off his list a big high school goal. He became the first Buckskin to win 100 career matches.

Cole Dillman's notches his 100th career win

The senior heavyweight wasted very little time in front of a packed CV gymnasium, pinning Reading's Jaron Burke in 51 seconds. The fall marked his 18th of the season. He enters Thursdays season finale against Cedar Crest with a record of 31-2.

Matt Maisano presents Dillman with the 100-win plaque

On January 28th, Dillman broke the school record for wins set in 2000 at 96 by CV assistant coach Matt Maisano. Below are interviews from Dillman, Maisano, and head coach Trent Turner following Tuesday's milestone win.

The two-time league champion will also aim to defend his sectional crown next weekend, and return to the District III tournament with a chance to one-up his 2010 silver medal. Dillman was also a state qualifier a season ago.

It has been a tough year for the Conestoga Valley boys' basketball team (7-13 overall, 6-8 in league play).

The senior guard scored 22 points against Hempfield to start the week, and only got better from there.

In back-to-back wins Cherrington had 24 points against Solanco, then led Friday's upset of Section Two leader Cocalico by pouring in 28 points.

The lefty netted eight three-pointers over the three-game stretch. Tonight Cherrington and the Bucks go on the road to Lebanon looking for win number three in a row.
