Rain Cancels Thursday's L-L Sports Schedule

Today's Cable-11 broadcast of CV at Warwick soccer is cancelled.

The heavy rain throughout the county today put a damper on the day's sports slate. Cable-11's broadcast of the CV-Warwick soccer game has been cancelled.

The game is tentatively rescheduled for 4pm tomorrow, though Blue Ridge will not be covering that game. If it is postponed until next week, there is a possibility Cable-11 will broadcast the make-up.

All evening activities have been cancelled. Here are the make-ups that were reported:

Cocalico
Field Hockey vs. Garden Spot - October 1
Soccer at Hempfield - October 5
Volleyball vs. Solanco - October 6

Conestoga Valley
Volleyball at Garden Spot - October 6

Manheim Central
Field Hockey vs. Cedar Crest - October 5, 4pm
Soccer vs. Lebanon Catholic - October 1, 4pm (Doe Run)
Girls Tennis at Garden Spot - October 4, 4pm
Volleyball at Elizabethtown - October 1
[Additional rescheduling: Soccer vs. Penn Manor - October 2, 11am]

Athlete of the Week

Cocalico freshman Spencer Moser has never lost to Manheim Central.

What did it take for the Eagles to break a string of losses dating back to 1976? Putting a freshman under center.

After splitting snaps with junior Ryan Schweitzer the first three weeks, Moser was handed the keys to the Cocalico offense in the team's biggest game.

Moser, who stands just 5'7", responded with 146 rush yards on 16 carries as well as the game-winning touchdown. It didn't hurt that senior fullback Austin Hartman poured in 257 yards and four touchdowns either.

But the Athlete of the Week goes to the young QB in his first start guiding the Eagles to something none of his older teammates had ever accomplished. Not too bad for, as Hartman refers to him, "the little guy."

*Note - Moser's 68-yard run fell short in our Play of the Week voting. Ephrata junior Alex Pstrak took that honor with 53% of the 377 votes for his 66-yard tackle-breaking touchdown run.

Coaching Milestone in New Holland

Denny Werner wins 200th career match with Garden Spot

Tuesday night's 3-game sweep versus Solanco was number 200 in the win column for Spartan Girls' Volleyball Coach Denny Werner. In his 13-year tenure, the longtime leader has endured just one losing season (his first, '98-99).

Coach Werner's guided the Spartans to an overall record of 195 wins and 81 losses in 12 seasons. Tonight's victory marked their fifth straight in Section 2 (5-0).

Below are interviews with Junior Lauren Horst and Coach Werner on the milestone night.

Spot volleyball has qualified for L-L League playoffs in 10 of 12 seasons under Werner, District 3 playoffs for 9 straight years, and PIAA playoffs in 2 of the last 3 seasons (Runner-Up in 2007).

Athlete of the Week: Ben Vavreck

Ephrata's Ben Vavreck earns award with two game-winning goals.

The Mounts won all three games last week, in large part because of the efforts of senior Ben Vavreck.

A week ago Vavreck's goal against McCaskey was the difference in a 2-1 victory. Then on Wednesday Vavreck scored the lone goal as the Mounts handed Warwick its first league loss.

After Ephrata's 6-0 win tonight, Vavreck has a team-high six goals on the season.

Here are clips of Vavreck's goal against Warwick and one against Solanco tonight.

Keeping it in the family in Manheim

There is a familiar face coaching the Baron girls volleyball team this fall. After Craig Dietrich took over the boys program last spring, his assistant - and wife - Becky took over the girls squad.

It has been a smooth transition so far as Manheim is 3-1 in 2010. For the full story, including a similar situation in Ephrata where Jaime Lesher replaced husband Brian, watch our newscasts tonight at 5:30 and 10:00. But for a fun story about how the coaching pair met, see below:

Personally, we think Craig is a Leonardo ... or maybe Splinter!

Athletes of the Week

Too close to call: Thompson and the Mounts take first fall honors.

With the return of high school sports this fall we are bringing back our Athlete of the Week from a summer hiatus. And its a double dip to kick it off after two impressive victories on the gridiron.

Deron Thompson - The Warwick tailback ran over the CV defense in the Warriors' 28-14 victory. Thompson finished with 245 yards on the ground and all four touchdowns. With sophomore Zach Hurst starting his first game at quarterback, Thompson took the ball 35 times to carry the load.

After missing practically all of 2009 with a broken leg the senior has amassed 338 yards and six touchdowns in two games. Imagine if he and Chris Schaffer had been in the backfield together a year ago...

Ephrata Mounts - The purple and gold pulled off their biggest upset in recent memory last Friday, 21-20 over Cocalico. Andrew Burkholder recovered a fumble and threw a 67-yard halfback option pass to Evan Weaver.

That set the stage for Scott Liebl's field goal block on a would-be game-winning attempt by the Eagles, giving Ephrata their first win over Cocalico since 2003.

2. Warwick's Deron Thompson stays on his feet and scores his third of four touchdown runs against Conestoga Valley.

3. Trevor St. Clair scoops up a Hempfield bad snap and takes it 47 yards for the first score of the game. Lancaster Catholic won 35-0.

4. Derek Hart uses all of his 6'5" frame to haul in a 2-pt. conversion against Wilson. Manheim Central lost 25-22.
